The Selfish Giant

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games to listen to them. "How happy we are here!" they cried to each other.

One day the Giant came back. He had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he was determined to return to his own castle. When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.

"What are you doing here?" he cried in a very gruff voice, and the children ran away.

"My own garden is my own garden," said the Giant; "anyone can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself." So he built a high wall all around it and put up a noticeboard.

He was a very selfish Giant.

The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it. They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over and talk about the beautiful garden inside. "How happy we were there," they said to each other.

Then the Spring came, and all over the country, there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant, it was still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but when it saw the noticeboard it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep. The only people who were pleased were Snow and Frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, "so we will live here all the year-round." The Snow covered the grass with her great white cloak, and Frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came. He was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden and blew the chimney-pots down. "This is a delightful spot," he said, "we must ask the Hail on a visit." So the Hail came. Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go. He was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.

"I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming," said the Selfish Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden; "I hope there will be a change in the weather."

But the Spring never came, nor the Summer. The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant's garden, she gave none. "He is too selfish," she said. So it was always Winter there, and the North Wind, and the Hail, and the Frost, and the Snow danced about through the trees.

One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be the King's musicians passing by. It was really only a little linnet singing outside his window, but it was so long since he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be the most beautiful music in the world. Then the Hail stopped dancing over his head, and the North Wind ceased roaring, and a delicious perfume came to him through the open casement. "I believe the Spring has come at last," said the Giant; and he jumped out of bed and looked out.

What did he see?

He saw a most beautiful sight. Through a little hole in the wall the children had crept in, and they were sitting in the branches of the trees. In every tree that he could see there was a little child. And the trees were so glad to have the children back again that they had covered themselves with blossoms and were waving their arms gently above the children's heads. The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing. It was a lovely scene, only in one corner, it was still winter. It was the farthest corner of the garden, and in it was standing a little boy. He was so small that he could not reach up to the branches of the tree, and he was wandering all around it, crying bitterly. The poor tree was still quite covered with frost and snow, and the North Wind was blowing and roaring above it. "Climb up! little boy," said the Tree, and it bent its branches down as low as it could, but the boy was too tiny.

And the Giant's heart melted as he looked out. "How selfish I have been!" he said; "now I know why the Spring would not come here. I will put that poor little boy on the top of the tree, and then I will knock down the wall, and my garden shall be the children's playground forever and ever." He was really very sorry for what he had done.

So he crept downstairs, opened the front door quite softly, and went out into the garden. But when the children saw him they were so frightened that they all ran away, and the garden became winter again. Only the little boy did not run, for his eyes were so full of tears that he did not see the Giant coming. And the Giant strode up behind him and took him gently in his hand, and put him up into the tree. And the tree broke at once into blossom, and the birds came and sang on it, and the little boy stretched out his two arms and flung them round the Giant's neck, and hugged him. And the other children, when they saw that the Giant was not wicked any longer, came running back, and with them came the Spring. "It is your garden now, little children," said the Giant, and he took a great ax and knocked down the wall. And when the people were going to market at twelve o'clock they found the Giant playing with the children in the most beautiful garden they had ever seen.

All day long they played, and in the evening they came to the Giant to bid him goodbye.

"But where is your little companion?" he said: "the boy I put into the tree." The Giant loved him the best because he had hugged him.

"We don't know," answered the children; "he has gone away."

"You must tell him to be sure and come here tomorrow," said the Giant. But the children said that they did not know where he lived and had never seen him before, and the Giant felt very sad.

Every afternoon, when school was over, the children came and played with the Giant. But the little boy whom the Giant loved was never seen again. The Giant was very kind to all the children, yet he longed for his first little friend and often spoke of him. "How I would like to see him!" he used to say.

Years went over, and the Giant grew very old and feeble. He could not play about any more, so he sat in a huge armchair, watched the children at their games, and admired his garden. "I have many beautiful flowers," he said; "but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all."

One winter morning he looked out of his window as he was dressing. He did not hate the Winter now, for he knew that it was merely the Spring asleep and that the flowers were resting.

Suddenly he rubbed his eyes in wonder and looked and looked. It certainly was a marvelous sight. In the farthest corner of the garden was a tree quite covered with lovely white blossoms. Its branches were all golden, and silver fruit hung down from them, and underneath it stood the little boy he had loved.

Downstairs ran the Giant in great joy, and out into the garden. He hastened across the grass and came near to the child. And when he came quite close his face grew red with anger, and he said, "Who has dared to wound you?" For on the palms of the child's hands were the prints of two nails, and the prints of two nails were on the little feet.

"Who has dared to wound you?" cried the Giant; "tell me, that I may take my big sword and slay him."

"No!" answered the child; "but these are the wounds of kindness."

"Who are you?" said the Giant, and a strange awe fell on him, and he knelt before the little child.

And the child smiled at the Giant, and said to him, "You let me play once in your garden, today you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise."

And when the children ran in that afternoon, they found the Giant lying dead under the tree, all covered with white blossoms.

Never Judge people

There, in a city far from here, lived a father and his son. They had lived happily, until one day a terrible event took place. The son, whose name was Justin, got injured in a car accident. After his accident, he was transferred to the hospital. He fought between life and death. His father arrived at the hospital on short notice and waited for the appointed doctor to arrive.

The doctor took a little while to arrive after hearing the news as he had not been present in the hospital at the moment he had heard that he had a patient. He arrived as quickly as he could come but this was very late for Justin's father as he started to yell at him for his laziness and casualty when a situation of life and death was present. He then asked him what he would feel if it was his son that was lying there.

Instead of shouting back at the father, the doctor smiled and requested him to calm down. The doctor attended to his patient and worked his magic. He managed to save Justin but the father, far from being embarrassed and thankful, again started yelling at the man and accused him of being a sloppy doctor. The doctor smiled again and left the scene.

After he had left the father asked the nurse, who was in charge of the operation, where did the doctor disappear to now? The nurse looked at him and replied in a small voice " His own son had an accident like this yesterday and he was unable to save him. He was at his grave the time the news was delivered to him and he has again gone to visit him."

The father looked horrified at his rudeness and asked for the address of the cemetery of the doctor's son and went to pay his condolences and apologize to the doctor. The doctor forgave the man as he lowered himself and placed a flower on top of the grave of his own son.

A Clever man

There were once four friends who went to a party together, bearing in mind that they had their exam tomorrow, but they took it casually and didn't bother studying. They spent the rest of their time dozing off and hanging out, not even considering the exam. Finally, when the exam day came, they met a while before school and arranged an excuse of what they would tell their teacher. They assembled a plan and hoped it would trick the teacher.

When they reached the school they said to the teacher all at once, in which they thought was a tired and injured voice, "Sir, we went on a camping trip a few days before the exam. We hoped we would reach home in time but when the day came for us to leave the tire of our car burst and we were forced to drag our car all the way from there to here. We hope you will understand and postpone our test."

The teacher, who was a clever man by nature, suspected the four friends but he let them off and gave them two days to prepare for the exam. The friends, overjoyed by their success, went joyfully home and prepared hard for their exams. When the time came to attempt the test the students approached the teacher. He said " Your examination will take place in separate rooms to ensure that you don't cheat. The examination paper is ...... different from last time so in case you have asked any of your fellow classmates about the exam, it will be completely useless. And oh your phone and any other communication item will be taken from you." The four friends, over-confident in their preparation, agreed to the terms and sat in their designated seats and after executing the terms, waited for the exam to arrive.

When the eyes of the students befell on the parchment, they were completely stunned for a minute or so and after coming back to their senses they looked up horrified at each of their individual examiners. They all smiled widely. The question paper consisted of only two questions:-

1. What is your name?

2. Which tire was punctured when you went on your camping trip?

Options:-

a) Top left
b) Top right
c) Bottom left
d) Bottom right

The students, ashamed of being outsmarted by their own teacher,  turned to solve the parchment knowing that each and every one of them would be getting severe punishment for their carelessness.

The Importance of Christmas

Simon was a big and fearless kid. He had dangerous sense of humor. He would bully his so called friends and say that he was only joking. So all in all he was a spoiled kid, or as others thought, but the most weirdest things was that he himself didn’t even know he was a bully.

Simon had no father as he had died in the cold war, so he lived with his mother and little brother. They lived in a small house located on an empty street. Simon had no problem with that but Simon was about to experience something that would change him completely.

It was nearly Christmas and his presents had arrived. Simon, upon looking at the presents, was overcome with a sense of greediness and he told his mother “ Mum! I’m going out to hang out with my friends.” His mother replied by saying “ Ok dear, but come back quickly, our favorite Christmas special is about to start. Simon promised he would come quickly and went out of the house. But he didn’t  linger around for his friends he put his real plan into action, to open the presents hid in his mother’s closet. He climbed the back window and stealthy entered the closet. As he opened his presents he was disappointed to see that he had not got what he wanted so he proceeded to open his brother’s presents but before he could open it a ghost appeared in front of him. He couldn’t believe his eyes! He had thought they were only in  movies and stuff but here was the living (well dead but you know what I mean) proof that this earth was inhabited not only by humans but others species as well. The ghost, who looked old and very fragile spook to him in a croaky voice and introduced himself, “ I am the ghost of the Christmas past and I am here to punish you for ruining this special day not only for yourself, but for your family and friends too and due to your cruelness you shall be treated harshly and will only be forgiven when learn the true meaning of Christmas.” Shock registered on every line on his face and before he could even open his mouth, in a blink of an eye, he found himself in a place he knew nothing about.

Simon wad pretty sure this was not his neighborhood and after looking around for a while he confirmed his theory. As he watched people arrived from every direction and spoke in low grunts and loud shouts. He also saw most of the wearing 18th century outfits. He was observing this strange area when a couple of boys saw him and smiled evilly and headed towards him. Simon was not sure whether to run or not but his proudness for his fearless self kept him rooted on the spot and when the boys reached him they started playing pranks on him. With a jolt, he remembered doing the same things to his friends back home and he tried to fight back but there were too many of them. At last when the boys left they called out to him “ don’t take it personally it was only for a bit of fun!”

As Simon was turning to leave he found himself face to face with the ghost who said “ This was the past Simon, to show you how each of your pranks hurt others and what they feel inside after you leave them. Now another ghost will take you to the present and show you your punishment.”

A little while later another ghost appeared, this one was a little healthier than the other one but this one had a menacing look in his face. The new ghost said “Hello Simon, I am the ghost of Christmas present and what I am about to show you will change your life.” And suddenly Simon was in a party, a birthday party  of his friend. He thought to himself and said, well this isn’t so bad and tried to talk to his friend but his friend didn't hear him. He shouted in his ear but he still couldn’t hear him and a dawning truth approached him, he was a ghost! He turned to move  away with panic and sadness in his eyes but he heard his name being called and turned his gaze hopefully to he source of the noise. He heard his name called out a few more times and tried to focus closely on what they were saying and he found out hat they were insulting him for being a bully and making jokes of him. His heart sank, he had thought them all as friends but he way they were talking, it seemed that they didn’t even need him. He turned and saw the ghost of Christmas present. He approached it and it said “ See Simon no one needs you, they all are happy without you and I hope you will will leave the this way.” Simon said nothing and bowed his head down in shame until he looked up and saw a different ghost in front of him.

This one was completely different from the other two a this was made up of metal and looked like a robot. It said in a robotic voice “ I am the ghost of Christmas future and I will take you to your next and worst punishment.” Simon tried to beg to the ghost to forgive him but it completely ignored him and teleported Simon to a graveyard. Simon looked around, thinking what he was supposed to do when he saw a familiar name on the grave. He looked closely and recognized his friends name. He looked at the other graves, all the graves and familiar names. He looked around for his grave thinking it would be here but it was no where to be found. He ghost appeared in front of him and ordered hi  to follow him. Simon followed he robot and it lead him to a place away which was completely barren except for a rock standing up fro a lumpy ground. The ghost said to Simon to read what was written on the rock. Simon bent closer and fell back from surprise. His own name was written on the old rock! The ghost said “ See Simon what will happen if you if you continue down this dark path? No one will love you in the present and in the future your grave will be separated from the others and you will lay here forgotten. Simon was horrified and pleaded to the ghost to give him another chance and after hours of pleading he ghost forgave him and sent him back to the closet.

Simon looked around and saw that nothing had changed. He rushed down and hugged his mother and brother who were both surprised and shocked at this behavior. After this he rushed home to his friends and gave everyone of them a present and asked for forgiveness. Many looked suspicious at first but later forgave him and Simon, having learned his lesson on the importance of Christmas, lived a happy life and treated people in a good way but sometimes  pranking them just for fun but remembered not to take it past the limit.

Black Holes

Black Holes are the most interesting and the most confusing thing Astronomy has ever found. Black Holes shatter our knowledge of Physics and defy the rules of science. We don’t know much about them just that they are gaining; stars collapse, supernovas explode, Black Holes form. Though Black Holes are dangerous, they are also very interesting. They are nothing like the world has ever seen. That’s why finding them is not so easy. Many laboratories throughout the world search for these invisible eaters. But to learn about these ever eating machines, we must learn how they came into being. That takes us back to the era of Einstein.

We already know about the great Einstein, who created the theory of relativity, he who also figured about the space-time continuum. Though his idea was a success, he still had doubt, but when the copies of his paper were released, an old German scientist by the name of Karl Schwarzschild, who worked as a planner and doctor in World War 1, bought a copy of Einstein’s papers and began to solve his equations and in the end he found the flaw. The flaw was about an object in space that sucked everything that came in its path because of its dense gravity (This were the early concepts of the Black Hole). He sent his regards to Einstein. Einstein read his notes and understood it but he refused to accept that such a thing even existed. This was unfortunate for Karl Schwarzschild as he died before he could prove his hypothesis to anyone and the ideas of the black hole faded away.

Not until in 1975 did people began to think again about Black Holes. Then an astronomer by the name of Paul Murdin searched the sky for a sign of Black Holes. He succeed in finding one, though oddly. His story starts when he was searching the skies for something extraordinary and he located a star orbiting something and what he observed was that when the star appeared close it was blue and when it was farther it appeared red (this is also known as Doppler’s shift). The star completed its orbit every 5.6 days. The unusual thing about this scene was that the star was orbiting something which emitted X-rays. The astronomers thought it was a Black Hole and many bets were placed on whether or not it was a Black Hole and the most important bet of all was between Stephen Hawking and Thorne.

In the bet Stephen betted that Cygnus X-1 wasn’t a Black Hole and Thorne betted that it was a Black Hole and throughout the years the hypothesis of the Black Hole became stronger and stronger and Stephen gave up the bet. It was confirmed that it was a Black Hole and it was feeding on its neighboring star slowly but steadily and creating a ring of energy around itself. The ring was not the only special thing about that Black Hole, it also was 15 times the mass of our sun or 15 solar masses. This was unlike anything the world had ever seen. This was also a great advancement in astronomy that they had discovered an unimaginable thing beyond human thought.

Through the years, astronomers revealed the wonders of the universe. It turns out that Cygnus X-1 was not the only Black Hole in the universe. Astronomers found many different types of things including the different types of Black Holes and the QUASARS (huge bright glowing stars) in the universe. They found that not always do Black Holes slowly eat their prey sometimes they eat stars quickly in months or even weeks. These black holes stay invisible and only show up when they warp light or eat stars. Though these types of Black Holes are important QUASARS also prove very interesting. They are very far away and emit strong light. Though these objects are unusual they are nothing compared to the super massive Black Holes which go to the top of the list.

These giant consumers are created from dust clouds which form stars but when these clouds stop making stars they cluster together to form a super massive Black Hole that grows over time. These suckers are usually found at the center of most galaxies. These types of Black Holes have massive amounts of energy.

Ligo, the most giant observatory in the world, which detected the smallest movement of cosmic gravitational waves in space-time fabric measured even beneath atomic level through the earth. This machine was made at two locations so if one was mistaken they would find out. This machine came in handy in September-14-2015 when the collision of two Black Holes sent a wave of energy throughout the universe that had 50 times the energy of all the stars in the universe for a fraction of a second.

This wave of energy traveled for 1.3 billion years to reach earth and when it hit earth, luckily the machine was on power so it recorded that message and so did the other machine and also a bunch of people were there to witness this historical event. This event confirmed the life of Black Holes and reminded us of the power of the universe. As we discover new types of wonders in the universe we also get more mysteries to resolve. This is the universe.
